10 Practical Tips to Help Your Child Master Their Times Tables

Learning the times tables can help your child in a number of ways. It can help set a foundation for the future and can also help set a foundation for learning more math as they get older. Here are 10 tips from Brize Norton Primary School to help make that process a little easier.

  1. First learn the 2, 5, and 10 tables. After those are learned, move on to the 3, 4, and 6, times tables. Once those are mastered, the 7, 8, and 9 tables can then be tackled.
  2. Learn only a few at a time, don’t try to learn even a whole times table set in one go. Try 1 x 6, 2 x 6 and 3 x 6 in one session, then add additional facts 1 or 2 at a time in later sessions.
  3. Try a few different strategies to see what works best, the 31 days to Faster Times Tables program contains written worksheets, audio questions and a free PDF with 31 different ways to master the multiplication tables.
  4. Try initially using objects such as sweets to help your child visualize the times tables and see what they really mean.
  5. Keep working on those old multiplication tables even while working on new ones. Repetition is the key.
  6. Use drawings or grids to show times tables such as 4 rows of 3 is 12.
  7. Bring in real life cases such as saving 4 cents every day would lead to saving how much in a week.
  8. Try mnemonics. These can include rhymes like “I ate and ate till I fell on the floor!” 8×8 is 64! Your child can make up their own for added fun!
  9. Consider making a recording of your own to help your child learn the times tables. You can even have your child do it on their own as they may learn faster if they hear their own voice. The 31 Days to Faster Times Tables Program contains audio of my own children reciting the times tables!
  10. Use games such as times tables table tennis which involves each player holding a tennis bat that is imaginary aiming to get to the next number in the times tables before striking the imaginary ball.

Learning the times tables can be tricky at times and there are a number of ways to learn them. Follow the great tips above to help your child master these important facts with ease.
